Tale of Two Ice Skating Rinks

Silver Bay has only officially been a city since 1954, but its settlers wasted no time getting things set up. Built to house workers at the mine, it is now populated with all the amenities that go with a well-established community of families making their lives in this valley in the wilderness. It has all that is needed for survival and recreation. There are schools, shops, churches, restaurants, a bowling alley, baseball diamonds, and two places to go ice skating. Sort of like Minneapolis and St. Paul, we could call these the “Twin Rinks,” being next door neighbors with similarities and differences. One rink is inside the Rukavina Arena and the other is just outside. The inside one is used for hockey most of the time, which you can watch. In the winter, ice skating is available two days a week. Wild Game and Brewer’s Feast

Local foods have been trendy for a few years, but for people who hunt and fish up north they’ve been in style for longer than that. The Northland in fall is inextricably tied to its wild game. For at least ten years (check out this article from 2006!) we’ve been celebrating the season with good beer and good food. Our beer partner is Castle Danger Brewery, which has been brewing “dangerously good ales” since 2011. After they outgrew their three-barrel brewhouse in Castle Danger, they opened a new taproom and brewery in Two Harbors just 15 minutes away from Grand Superior Lodge. The founders, Clint and Jamie McFarlane, have the philosophy that the best beers to create are the ones that break new ground: “Castle Danger beers are all designed with a flavor profile in mind. We may start with a base style, but expand upon it to create something unique. There are hundreds of great beers that are true-to-style available in the beer market. We prefer to use traditional brewing practices to produce unique, flavorful beers. In our minds, this is the only way to approach brewing.” [...] Read More

Everything Falls in Tettegouche

Tettegouche in Fall
This year, fall in the northern hemisphere is officially between September 22 and December 20. This solar-based definition lumps everywhere together from an inch north of the Equator to the North Pole, and everywhere in between. If we think of the fall being the time when it is cold but not really cold yet, then fall usually ends a little before this along the shores of Lake Superior. Still, during the official fall many things are falling. [...] Read More
