Grand Marais is vibrant community nestled in between the natural splendor of Lake Superior and the majesty of the Sawtooth Mountains. I’ve been making an annual pilgrimage there for many years. Each time I find something new to do and see. Here are my 5 Great Grand Marais Adventures – in no particular order.
Hike Pin Cushion
There are a lot of great hiking trails in and around Grand Marais, but my favorite hiking destination, by far, is the Pincushion Mountain Trails system. It’s just four miles up the Gunflint Trail, and well worth a trip. The view of Lake Superior from the Pincushion Mountain Overlook is breathtaking. I recommend leaving in time to catch a sunset or sunrise.
Head down to Artist’s Point, and you can’t miss the Cairns. People build them year round from the stones along the shore. If you loved building blocks as a kid, then this will really take you back. I’ve spent a whole afternoon building the perfect Cairn.
Sailing aboard the Hjørdis
You don’t have to wait for Duluth’s Tall Ships festival to sail on a gorgeous wooden schooner! The North House Folk School offers daily sailing trips on the Hjørdis (May – September). If you’re interested in learning to sail (rather than just relaxing on the bow) the school also offers sailing classes.
Just take a look at these photos taken by visitors from around the world. Once you’ve stepped on to Artist’s Pointe you’ll understand how it got its name. Bring your camera, and wile away the hours shooting the shoreline, woods, Cairns, and lighthouse. You’ll have a blast, and come home with a collection of wonderful reminders of your trip to Grand Marais.
Even for a novice, like me, kayaking in the protected Grand Marais harbor is a blast. Weaving in between the moored sailboats, paddling along the breakwalls and up to the lighthouse can be a great adventure for the whole family. Don’t have a kayak? Decided it was too much hassle to bring with you? No problem! Bear Track outfitting in downtown Grand Marais will rent them for a day at a time.
So that’s it. Those are my top 5 Great Grand Marais Adventures. What do you like to do when you visit the north shore? Let us know on Facebook!
