Food and wine lovers, your day is coming. Regardless of relationships and commitments, Valentine’s Day holds for you. It’s a once a year opportunity for fine dining. Often accompanied by fine wine. After what has been a long cold spell there is even more motivation to get out and live a little. So the question is not “if,” but “where?” There aren’t more than a half dozen of places that offer a truly unique, above and beyond their normal menu, experience. And there’s only one location that will have a chef-created four-course dinner and Minnesota’s biggest, longest running, ice bar.
By now you know I can only be referring to Splashing Rock Restaurant at Grand Superior Lodge, home of the Blu Ice Bar. An easy drive on the Express Way takes you to Two Harbors (from Duluth), and 11 miles further is your turn – towards the lake – to the authentic log lodge resort. A stop in the Ice Bar is a must. It’s an annual tradition, now, to celebrate winter (yes, even this winter) with an ice-formed shot glass filled with a shot of Bailey’s. Truth is, it’s so smooth and refreshing, maybe two!
There’s a new Chef at Splashing Rock, so I’m anxious to try his broiled Lobster dinner…or maybe I’d prefer the Leg of Lamb (after never trying lamb until a year ago, I’m now a huge fan). In any event, what I love most about this dinner menu, is that for $49 I know I’ll have four delicious courses, and I’ll have a choice of soup or salad, choice of entrée and choice for dessert – which also comes with a complimentary glass of chilled Champagne! Ice Bar, four-course dinner, Champagne…the only question is whether to get a lakeside suite and make it a full weekend.
That’s a thought for another day…
