For half day trips in the area, you are welcome to use our complimentary bikes and helmets that are signed out from the front desk. If you prefer full day rides or the experience of mountain biking, you’ll want to bring your own bikes and gear. Nearby we’ve got smooth, paved trails or hard-pack mountain bike trails. So have a hearty breakfast at Splashing Rock Restaurant, fill your water bottles and enjoy some fabulous biking. After your day of riding, include a swim and relaxing in our lakeview spa.
Gitchi-Gami State Trail
Upon completion, this paved trail will run from Two Harbors to Grand Marais! Currently, the longest completed section starts just up the road at Gooseberry Falls State Park and continues for 13.1 miles to Beaver Bay with a stop at Split Rock Lighthouse.
May we recommend the following:
Split Rock Ride
Begin at Gooseberry Falls State Park and ride the 4.7 miles to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. Once there you can ride up and tour the historic lighthouse, and if you feel like more riding, try some of the 6 miles of mountain bike trails in the state park. Have a shoreline picnic lunch and head back to Gooseberry.
Round Trip Ride to Beaver Bay
Start at Gooseberry and ride to Split Rock where can take a break and tour the lighthouse, then hop back on your bikes and ride to Beaver Bay for lunch. Amble about this tiny town, the oldest on the shore, then ride back to Grand Superior. Total miles 26.2 + spur trail to the lighthouse.

Mountain Bike at the State Parks
The two state parks closest to Grand Superior have excellent hard-packed mountain bike trails plus amenities to enhance your ride; restrooms, drinking water, visitor centers, gift shops and exhibits.
Gooseberry Falls State Park
Eight miles of trails start on the north side of the highway and criss-cross the wooded terrain of a large section of the park. Start on the west side of the river for a quick uphill ride to Gooseberry River, cross and decide to continue riding somewhat parallel to the river or head inland, choosing the hillier southern trails that offer two scenic overlooks.
Split Rock Lighthouse State Park
Six miles of trails start in the park and travel west, skirting the shoreline, and around the base of Day Hill, where you should hop off your bikes and hike the spur trail to the overlook at the top! From here you can follow Split Rock Creek north, crossing Highway 61 and ride a 1.5-2 mile loop, or continue exploring the woodlands adjacent to the shoreline.
Sonju Trail – Short, Paved & in Two Harbors
The Sonju Trail is a paved lakeshore there-and-back path starting at Burlington Bay near the campground and leading to Two Harbor’s waterfront. Total is 2-miles + a ride through town for ice cream!
