Picnics are absolutely lovely! We highly encourage them here at Grand Superior Lodge. Impromptu cheese-and-cracker-affairs, roasted hot dogs and chips, or wine and smoked fish; it’s not what you eat, it’s the fun of eating in our beautiful outdoors.
Looking for picnic supplies? We recommend take-out meals from Splashing Rock, local smoked fish from Lou’s (Two Harbors) and all the fixings from the local Super One grocery store or variety of convenience stores. Morning picnics can be enhanced with a stop at the Vanilla Bean bakery or Blueberry (conveniently located next to each other in Two Harbors).
And here’s a listing of our favorite Picnic Spots:
Grand Superior Lodge
On our massive outcropping stone beach, these rocks were made for sitting in the sunshine at the lake’s edge.
Flood Bay State Wayside
A nice little agate-hunting beach and picnic area just south of Grand Superior but northeast of Two Harbors.
Two Harbors Waterfront
Picnic tables, a gazebo and the chance to see a ship or two! In Two Harbors, off Highway 61, on the waterfront.
Gooseberry Falls State Park *
The king-daddy of picnic spots! Choose tables at the picnic area near the river mouth on Lake Superior, or spread your blanket near the visitor center, along the river or in the woods on Highway 61, 2 miles northeast of Grand Superior.
Split Rock Lighthouse State Park *
Enjoy the tables near the parking area by the lighthouse, or better yet, head down to the pavilion off the lake shore, or eat right on the beach on Highway 61, 14 miles northeast of Grand Superior.
Tettegouche State Park *
We like spreading a blanket at the river mouth and they have a picnic area near the visitor center
on Highway 61, 19 miles northeast of Grand Superior.
Crosby Manitou State Park *
The place to picnic in a quiet forest; follow the trails in to tables, or pick from a variety of delightful woodland locales on Highway 61, 19 miles northeast of Grand Superior + 7 miles inland.
* Have you seen our Minnesota State Park package? After selecting your dates and room type on our on-line reservation system, check the promotion box for State Park Package and receive a free day pass good for all Minnesota State Parks. This package must be selected at time of reservation to receive as complimentary guest service.
Why the last half of August is the best time to visit!
