Canoeing

Grand Superior Lodge is all about Lake Superior! The magnificent views of the lake blending into the horizon, the sounds of waves, and the endless color palette – those are the magical elements that no matter how long you stay, never get old. Day to day, and often hour to hour, these elements change, and the entire resort is situated to provide guests immediate access (inside and out) to the ever changing sights and sounds of the lake. But, have you ever wondered what the perspective is like on the lake? Would the lake look any different? How does it feel to be "on the water"? What does the shoreline look like from the lake?

We encourage you to find out! Grand Superior Lodge offers complementary use of canoes, paddles and life jackets for you to explore our 1500-feet of shoreline and beyond. Our beaches allow for safe and easy launching and landing.

We like paddling just offshore and heading northeast, or up the shore. This will give you a chance to get comfortable and paddle through the three little bays adjacent to Grand Superior. Directly east off the point of the third bay is a cluster reef of rocks, watch for nesting gulls and breaking waves. Midway into the next bay is the outlet of the Castle Danger Creek. At this point you will have paddled about a mile and may want to turn and admire the return view. Prevailing breezes are typically from the northeast making for an easier paddle back!

Bring a camera! The views are completely different than from shore. And when you are sitting in a canoe, you really get the feeling that you are on the largest freshwater lake in the world.

We do always consider safety first, so canoes are available "weather permitting", with sign-up at the front desk.
